Welsh pair Craig Evans and Nick Rees won the men’s Over 40 title as the UK Padel Masters Series opened at Jaxx Padel in Llansamlet on Saturday and Sunday.

They beat fellow Welsh players Craig De Silva and Peter Wright in an all-Wales final, one of eight titles decided over the weekend of October 10 and 11.

The men’s Open went to a championship tie-break, with Welsh hopes Hugo Cochlin and Matt Lloyd losing 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 to Tom Davenport and Alex Whitaker.

In the women’s Open, India Rojano won the title alongside Nikki Trewin in her first padel competition, beating Ellen Jones and Donna Van Zyl.

De Silva’s double weekend and a runner-up twice over

De Silva did not leave empty-handed: he and Fraser Wright took the men’s Over 50, beating Jonathan Bunn and Peter Wright, who finished runner-up in two finals.

Natalie Ackland and Kerry Quirk won the women’s Over 40 against Van Zyl and Catherine Wray, and Marie Bell and Annalie Poccard beat Mandy Donald and Naomi Thomas in the women’s Over 50.

In the Over 60s, Simon England and Colin McGill beat Jack Colbourne and Craig Stewart, while Jane Hancock and Liz Sim saw off Maeve O’Rorke and Sally Pendry.

UK Padel, which runs the series, said the entry was one of the strongest fields seen at a padel competition in Wales.

Lawn Tennis Association figures cited by the organiser show 6,664 players had competed in sanctioned padel events in 2026 by early October, a third more than in the whole of 2025.

‘A very encouraging start’: Fleet, Glasgow and Portugal next

Neil Percival, chief operating officer of UK Padel, said: “Swansea was a very encouraging start to the Masters. We saw some excellent Welsh performances, but also India Rojano winning the Women’s Open in her first competition.”

“Taking the Masters to venues like Jaxx is an important part of that. It brings national competition into local communities, raises the profile of regional clubs and gives players something to work towards,” he added.

Swansea was the first of five stops, as the series set out when it was announced: Padel Hub Fleet in Hampshire follows on November 21 and 22, then Glasgow in January and Albufeira in Portugal in February, before the finals in Tunbridge Wells on March 13 and 14.

Entries for Fleet close at 10am on November 9, and an Over 70 category is planned as the series develops, UK Padel said.

Matches from Jaxx were streamed on UK Padel’s YouTube channel, with highlight clips from the men’s Open and Over 40 finals.

Jaxx, with 13 indoor and outdoor courts on the old Press Glass site, is owned by Swansea.com, the group behind Pure Swansea, and calls itself Wales’ largest indoor padel centre.
