Specsavers say the clinic is part of its nationwide initiative to improve access to eye care for all and forms part of the company’s sustainability ‘communities’ strategy.
Matthew Harvey, Optometrist Director at Specsavers Llanelli, said: “Every day, we improve people’s quality of life by helping them achieve better sight and hearing. Unfortunately, for the several thousand people that are experiencing homelessness in the UK, it can be incredibly difficult to get access to this care and it is very much a key tenet of our founding vision – to make expert care accessible to everyone.”
Shanade Forde volunteered at the clinic, which saw seven patients and dispensed nine pairs of glasses. She said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the day at Crisis Swansea. It was a pleasure to help those accessing the service and it was clear how beneficial it was to them.”
Specsavers is also collaborating with Vision Care for Homeless People, Big Issue, Focus Ireland, Simon Community NI and other homelessness organisations to create long-term solutions to eye health inequality. Work includes lobbying and influencing government to ensure people experiencing homelessness have access to free eye tests, glasses and domiciliary services.
