A Scottish athlete who died after getting into difficulty during the Ironman 70.3 Swansea triathlon has been named as Sam Buchan, aged 31.
Mr Buchan was competing in the swim section of the race on Sunday 13 July when safety personnel noticed he was in distress. He received immediate medical care and was taken by boat to a designated extraction point at the harbour, before being transferred to hospital for further treatment. He sadly died three days later, on Wednesday 16 July2.
The event marked the UK’s first Ironman Pro Series, attracting thousands of competitors to Swansea’s waterfront and Gower coastline. The race includes a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run.
In a statement, Ironman Wales said:
“Our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the athlete. We will continue to offer them our support and keep them in our thoughts as they go through this challenging time. We are deeply grateful to the swim safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide the athlete with medical assistance.”
Mr Buchan is the youngest Ironman competitor to have died in a two-year period that has seen four fatalities across Ironman events. In 2023, Andrew Ireland, 61, from Bridgend, drowned during the swim section of the Swansea triathlon. That same year, two men died during the swim portion of an Ironman event in Youghal, Ireland — one in his 40s and the other in his 60s2.
The Swansea coroner’s office confirmed Mr Buchan’s identity earlier this week. An inquest is expected to follow.
