Swansea City fall to Bochum in Austrian training camp test

Swansea City slipped to a 2–0 defeat against VfL Bochum in their latest pre‑season run‑out in Austria, a match split into three 30‑minute periods to maximise squad involvement.

The Swans made a lively start and thought they had taken the lead when Adam Idah drove forward and finished confidently, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Former Celtic striker Idah then intercepted a loose back‑pass but lifted his shot over the bar.

Bochum responded with the opener before the end of the first period, as Alessandro Crimaldi broke through and clipped a composed finish over goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux to make it 1–0.

The German side doubled their advantage early in the second phase. A quick break down the right released Maximilian Wittek, whose low cross found Berkan Taz to steer home for 2–0.

Swansea introduced Liam Cullen and several senior players during the middle third, with Wales forward Cullen seeing a shot blocked from the edge of the box and Vigouroux producing a sharp save to keep the deficit at two.

The final 30 minutes were dominated by Swansea’s academy contingent, with Thomas Woodward, Zeidane Inoussa, Sam Parker, Cameron Congreve, Filip Lissah, Carter Heywood, Arthur Parker, Dan Watts and Evan Watts all featuring. Their energy lifted the tempo, and Cullen and Parker both threatened from set‑piece situations.

Substitute goalkeeper Paul Farman produced the standout moment of the closing stages, diving full‑stretch to tip away a curling long‑range effort from Christian Rasmussen.

Swansea finished the match with 10 academy players on the pitch, underlining head coach Vítor Matos’ commitment to youth development during the Austrian camp.
