As the countdown begins for this weekend’s IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea, pupils across the city are adding a heartfelt local touch to one of Wales’s biggest sporting events. In a project blending creativity with community spirit, schoolchildren have created postcards filled with motivational messages for athletes competing in the internationally recognised race on Sunday 13 July.
Schools including Pontlliw Primary, Cila Primary, Glyncollen Primary, and St Helens Primary took part in the Athlete Postcard Project, which saw hundreds of colourful cards filled with encouraging words like “Never give up”, “You are a winner”, and “Repeat after me – you can do it!” Each card will be placed in race packs, ready to be discovered by triathletes preparing to take on the challenging 70.3-mile course through Swansea Bay, Gower and Mumbles.
This year’s event follows on from the release of a powerful new film about the IRONMAN experience, which was recently screened in Swansea. The documentary shed light on the emotional highs and personal battles faced by athletes, highlighting the kind of mental resilience these young pupils are now rallying behind.
Cllr. Robert Smith, Cabinet Member for Education and Learning, said:
“It’s lovely to see pupils from across the city embracing the IRONMAN spirit. We hope this inspires future participation.”
Cllr. Robert Francis-Davies, Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration, Events & Tourism, added:
“This is the first Pro Series IRONMAN event to take place in the UK, and Swansea’s role speaks volumes about the city’s standing in the global triathlon community.”
Rebecca Sutherland, Race Director, IRONMAN 70.3 Swansea, said:
“Opening their backpacks full of nerves and finding these unexpected messages—it’s a special moment. It makes a real difference.”
Spectators are encouraged to join the excitement from 7am on Sunday 13 July, with the triathlon kicking off at Prince of Wales Dock and concluding at Museum Park near the National Waterfront Museum, where community energy is set to meet athletic endurance in spectacular style.
