SWANSEA: Skyline to shut major roads near stadium on Sunday

Major roads near the Swansea.com Stadium are set to close on Sunday as construction continues on the Skyline Swansea project.

Drivers heading to the stadium, Morfa retail park or the city centre from the M4 at Ynysforgan could see diversions on Sunday.

Heading into town on the A4217? Expect a detour

The A4217 is the road into town along the bottom of Kilvey Hill. Its southbound side, carrying traffic towards the city centre, will be shut between the Brunel Way junction and White Rock Roundabout from 8am to 5pm on Sunday 1 November.

Traffic coming down the A4067 from the Swansea Valley and the M4 at Junction 45 is caught too: southbound drivers on both roads will be diverted, according to Skyline.

Skyline has not listed any closure for traffic heading out of town.

The A4217 diversion: past the stadium and through Landore and Hafod

Instead of carrying on along the bottom of the hill, drivers will be sent onto Brunel Way, over the river and past the stadium.

From there, the signed route heads into town down Morfa Road, through Landore and Hafod, and on to New Cut Road.

Drivers then cross back over the river at Tawe Bridge to pick up the A4217 again.

Diversion signs and traffic management will be in place all day, Skyline says.

Pentre-Chwyth Road open, but with temporary lights

If you use Pentre-Chwyth Road, it will stay open in both directions.

Expect a wait, though: a short stretch near its junction with the A4217 will be down to a single lane under temporary traffic lights.

Foxhole Road and Kilvey Road could be busier

In St Thomas, Skyline is warning drivers to expect extra traffic on Foxhole Road and Kilvey Road during the day.

Why the A4217 is closing

Skyline has not said what work needs the road shut, beyond saying that construction on the project is continuing.

The gondola will run from Landore Park and Ride, across the river, to the top of Kilvey Hill, so its line has to pass over the A4217. Skyline has not said whether Sunday’s closure is linked to that.

Building work on the project normally runs from 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, Skyline says, so Sunday’s work is outside its usual hours.

Foundations for the gondola’s base station at Landore Park and Ride are finished, with the steel frame going up next, the company said earlier this month.

The £49m attraction started construction in May and is due to open in 2028.
