The longstanding Costcutter at Swansea University has been replaced by a SPAR, with a revamped shop opening for the new academic year.
The existing store team has stayed on through the change, with manager Emma Snaydon continuing to lead it.
The opening announcement also says there are additional paid roles for students, although it does not specify how many.
For shoppers, the changes include an expanded chilled section and more food to go, according to the release.
Philpotts sandwiches and Iceland frozen products are among the new additions to the shelves.
The meal deal has also been revamped, alongside a range of everyday essentials.
The shop is open to the wider community, with NHS staff, local residents and people visiting Singleton Park or the seafront among the customers it hopes to attract.
A spokesperson for Swansea University Students’ Union said the changes were intended to meet different customers’ needs, from students buying lunch between lectures to NHS staff on a break and residents stopping during a walk.
Ms Snaydon said the refreshed layout and wider choice had already received positive feedback from customers.
The release also reported a favourable response from an unnamed student, who found the shop brighter and easier to use and welcomed the expanded lunch options.
The grand opening took place during Freshers’ Week, with giveaways and elected student officers joining the celebrations.
A red and green balloon arch framed the ribbon-cutting, while a spin-to-win prize wheel formed part of the launch activities.
The opening follows another SPAR changeover in Swansea earlier this year. In June, a family-run convenience store in Townhill reopened under the brand after a revamp.
