The research looked at 6 of the UK’s biggest supermarkets; Aldi, Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose.

The cost was calculated based on the basic ingredients to make the classic lemon and sugar pancakes, however we can also reveal the cheapest supermarket to get your other favourite toppings.

We looked at the cheapest ingredient options available across 6 supermarkets for the classic Shrove Tuesday ‘sugar and lemon’ pancake, the ingredients looked at were:

  • 1.5kg Plain Flour
  • 6 Medium Eggs
  • 250g Unsalted Butter
  • 2 Pints of Semi-Skimmed Milk
  • 1kg Sugar
  • Lemons

Aldi took the top spot, with the total for the six ingredients needed for classic lemon and sugar pancakes coming to £6.68.

Sugar and lemon isn’t for everyone – many Brits enjoy getting creative with their pancake toppings, with some even going for the very controversial savoury route. We’ve compiled a list of nine popular pancake toppings, and revealed which were the cheapest and the supermarket to pop by if you’re looking to save money.

Strawberry jam was the cheapest alternative topping, with Morrisons being the cheapest place to pick some up – a jar of ‘Morrisons Savers Strawberry Jam’ will only set you back 36p. This was followed by honey, which you can pick up for 75p from Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Like honey, due to many supermarkets now offering an ‘Aldi Price Match’ – some of the toppings can be found for the same price across several supermarkets, such as bananas (78p), peanut butter (99p), squirty cream (£1.45) and strawberries (£1.69)

Many who opt for savoury pancakes would likely be on the hunt for streaky bacon that can be paired with butter and syrup, Aldi was the cheapest place for this with a pack of ‘Everyday Essentials Unsmoked Streaky Bacon Rashers’ costing £1.45.

The most expensive topping in the list is caramelised biscuit spread, made popular by Biscoff. Whilst Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons only stocked the official Biscoff spread, which retails for around £3.20 on average, Aldi and Asda have their caramelised biscuit spreads, which are known to be very similar. Aldi again, was the cheapest option with their ‘Belmont Biscuits Smooth Biscuit Spread’ costing £1.99.
