Mr Gething has been dogged by months of criticism of his acceptance of a £200,000 donation to his March leadership campaign from a company run by a man that was twice convicted of environmental offences.
He has also been criticised for his handling of the sacking of Cabinet Member Hannah Blethyn for leaking to the press – something she has strenuously denied.
Mr Gething recently lost a confidence vote in the Senedd after Plaid pulled out of their power sharing agreement and two of Mr Gething’s Labour party members, Lee Waters and Hannah Blethyn were absent from the vote.
Mr Gething’s resignation came after four of his most senior cabinet colleagues handed in their own resignations in an apparent co-ordinated attempt to force Mr Gething to stand down.
Cabinet members Jeremy Miles, Lesley Griffiths and Julie James all handed in their resignations this morning along with the government’s top legal adviser, counsel general Mick Antoniw.
In his resignation announcement published to social media, Mr Gething said: “I have taken the difficult decision to start the process of stepping down as Prif Weinidog. It has been the honour of my life to do this job, but it has also been the most challenging time, for me, and my family. I have always acted to serve Wales, and that will never stop.
“It has been an honour to be able to show underrepresented communities that there is a place for them, for us, in Wales. I will now discuss a timetable for the election of new leader of my party. Diolch o galon to everyone who has supported me and my family.”
