Swansea City head coach was pleased with both the offensive and defensive sides of his team's play as the Swans continued their recent strong form to beat Coventry 2-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena yesterday afternoon.

A dominant first half proved the difference with early strikes from Liam Cullen and Ollie Cooper putting Williams’ side in the ascendancy.

Coventry would have their threats and were rewarded in the 34th minute with midfielder Jack Rudoni’s long-range effort cannoning off the unfortunate Ronald to half the Swans advantage.

Forward Norman Bassette would then come close for the Sky Blues clattering the Swans crossbar with Lawrence Vigouroux making a fine reaction save in the aftermath. It would be the away side who would be good value to take a slender lead into the break.

After an unprecedented overhead thunderstorm that saw the players taken off the pitch shortly after the restart, Williams’ side would dig in to earn a fine victory to continue their fine 17-game unbeaten run against the Sky Blues.

The Swans, showing similar resolute qualities to that against Norwich last weekend would defend excellently to see out the game to earn a first victory away from south Wales in this campaign.

“I think we showed our quality, particularly in the first half,” said Williams.

“Then it was more the grit in the second more with the incredible conditions. You saw everything today that you need to be a good team.

“I have been pretty tough with the group and they have taken that on board.

“This is not an easy place to play. They are a really good team and have strong support inside this arena which keeps its noise.

“That can be daunting but the players today controlled themselves really well and put themselves in a good position after the first 45.

“There was good build-up play that led to both [goals] in terms of a dead ball [situation]. The way we got through the pitch for that was good to give us the opportunity.

“The second goal then is excellent from Ollie [Cooper]. We were good value for the two goals at that stage of the game. The game then changed and we had to show a different side.

“Everyone was really anxious [about the lightning]. A lot of the players didn’t know what was going on and whether the game had been postponed at that point.

“If you allow your mind to drift then you can get caught out, especially in the first few moments when the game restarts.

“They did great though and I’m really pleased it didn’t know us out of our rhythm.

“It’s too early to talk about momentum, we need to continue. Certainly, it was an encouraging performance away from home at a tough place.

“Some of the quality shown was red hot. For us to control that was really pleasing.”
