Williams excited about ‘powerful and pacey’ Ronald the Swans first ever Brazilian player

Swansea City head coach Luke Williams is excited to work with ‘powerful and pacey’ Ronald, his side’s first signing of what could be an active few days of incomings and outgoings at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The signing of the Brazilian has caught many off guard in a transfer window that has seen little movement from clubs within the Championship.

The Swans who lie in 16th position in the standings next face a tough challenge against league leaders Leicester City at the King Power Stadium tomorrow night and will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing cup exit to Bournemouth on Thursday night.

The former Notts County boss admitted he got his tactics wrong in the 5-0 defeat to the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium and is keen to improve against league pace setters who not only boast the best attack in the league but obtain the most frugal defensive backline.

As Williams looks for his first league win in charge at the third attempt, the Londoner hopes the exiting Brazilian will bring an extra dynamic in the final third. Whilst he believes the signing will provide the flexibility to allow some of his players to play in more of their natural positions.

“I’m really pleased [with the signing] even saying that is exciting,” said Williams.

“We have our first Brazilian player and now we need to look after him and settle him in so he can perform on the pitch.

“When we think about Brazil, we think about great football and great players.

“It’s been an incredible effort. Paul Watson is trying to unearth talent because we need to try to find an edge and a different way to our competitors.

“You need to find an edge and a different way so you can overcome all the hurdles [In the transfer window]. We try to look at all angles and data and here we are with an exciting player that fits what we are trying to do.

“He’ll certainly bring us pace, power and a hunger. He’s somebody with a competitive edge.

“This does give us more flexibility and allows us to play players in more of a position natural to them.

“More focused signings will also give us a healthier balance of players playing in positions that they can really excel in.”

Williams is expecting a busy couple of days before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday evening with more movement in and out of the club expected to happen.

The former Notts County boss says the club does not need to sell to fund new additions despite outlaying a seven-figure sum on Ronald, however, Williams could not guarantee that forward Jerry Yates would still be at the club come the start of February.

“We got close on a couple of players, and it is tough. When things are going well it is easy, when you are in the market with more clubs in a similar place it gets more difficult,” continued Williams.

“We have narrowly missed out on a few players; we could be sitting here with now with two or three signings.

“The work though hasn’t stopped, let’s see if we can make the right deals and get the right people here, that’s the important thing.

“There is money available for the right people. The club is ambitious, but there’s a difference between being gung-ho and making plenty of mistakes which is not good for anyone.

“I’m not hearing anything of the sort that we are trying to balance up [the books] and someone has to go. We haven’t had that type of conversation.

“We still want more pace, more power and more athleticism. We want a hungry and aggressive team on the pitch, so players coming in will be of that ilk.

“If we feel we have found the right one we will do everything we can to get that player.

“I’m not surprised [with the transfer talk over Jerry Yates] but at the moment it is just speculation. It has come from somewhere, but it is not more serious than that.

“It has to be sometimes the right fit for the right player and the right balance for us. There are many things to consider.

“We can’t though leave ourselves short for the good of the player because that is irresponsible, but holding on to a player who doesn’t get minutes is the same.

“The deal has to be correct because you don’t want to give away a good player to somebody for nothing, so all these things need to be tied together.

“There is so much going on that potentially it changes the landscape, but we are focusing on trying to strengthen the squad.

“Things can change very quickly on deadline day; it is like a chain reaction. We sit tight for now and see what happens in the closing days of the window.”
