FFOS LAS RACECOURSE: Three training doubles on a competitive Sunday card

Eight races made for a competitive Sunday afternoon at Ffos Las, with three training and riding combinations leaving the Carmarthenshire track with doubles.

Ralph Beckett and jockey Rhys Clutterbuck took two of the day’s races, while the training partnership of Bernard Llewellyn and Robert Williams claimed both divisions of the mile handicap.

Macarone completes the hat-trick

The card opened with a six-furlong handicap (1.19pm), in which Sub Thirteen was the marginal favourite but could do no better than fourth for Jeremy Scott. The Grace Harris-trained Macarone led three furlongs out and went clear, and though the advantage was reduced, the gelding held on by half a length under Ben Ffrench-Davis at 3/1.

The five-furlong nursery (1.49pm) brought the first leg of the Beckett and Clutterbuck double, market leader Rhodes Runner justifying 9/4 favouritism by two and three quarter lengths. Wolf’s Gallop was second at 10/1, with Perigord Noir third at 7/2.

Stan Moore took the five-furlong handicap (2.24pm) with another well-backed winner, Call Time coming home three lengths clear under Millie Wonnacott at 4/9. Bama Lama was second, a further two lengths ahead of Snow Day.

Carthusian sees off the joint favourites

The two-mile handicap (2.59pm) produced the day’s widest winning margin, Jennie Candlish’s Carthusian staying on strongly to win by just under five lengths at 9/4, comfortably accounting for joint favourites Campeona and Queenie St Clair.

Beckett and Clutterbuck completed their double in the extended seven-furlong novice (3.34pm), Ghost Raider making all and keeping on inside the final furlong to win at 100/30, with favourite Silent Force back in second.

A double for Llewellyn and Williams

The first division of the mile handicap (4.09pm) went to Bernard Llewellyn and Robert Williams, Pebble Dash springing a surprise at 11/1 to beat favourite Rosemary’s Rose by a length and a half.

The pair struck again in the second division (4.44pm), Kaleidoscope Eyes running on well in the final furlong to win by two lengths at 4/1, seeing off the well-backed Arvana Belle, sent off at 10/11.

The closing amateur riders’ handicap over ten furlongs (5.19pm) went to the David Flood-trained Wellwhatshappenin, always doing enough and winning by just under a length at 9/4. Favourite Pride Eye finished last of the five.

Three of the eight selections in our Sunday preview obliged, with Macarone, Call Time and Wellwhatshappenin all winning. Carthusian, Ghost Raider and Kaleidoscope Eyes were also among the horses flagged ahead of the meeting without being the headline pick in their races.
