In a letter to Llanelli Town Council, Secretary of Llanelli’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Tara Fisher writes that key figures from the town including former Conservative Party Leader, Lord Michael Howard; former Lord High Chancellor, Sir Robert Buckland and Welsh Billionaire Specsavers founder, Doug Perkins have all been consulted on the bid.

The Chamber of Trade and Commerce was looking for the support of the Town Council to “raise local people’s low expectations of their quality of life in Llanelli”.

The town, which has a population of just over 42,000 people, would be one of the UK’s smallest cities if the bid was successful.

Neighbouring Swansea, which was made a city in 1969, has a population of over 300,000 people. King Charles, then Prince of Wales came to Swansea to help the city celebrate it’s 50th anniversary in 2019.
