In an entertaining contest with chances at either end, Swansea struck first with Marko Stamenic’s close-range strike sending the hosts into a surprise half-time lead.

The Saints produced more of a clinical edge to their play after the break and after a barrage of pressure on the Swans goal equalised through substitute Shea Charles header from a set-piece situation.

Both sides had chances for a winner with Gustavo Nunes and Goncalo Franco closest for the home side whilst Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux pulled off a string of top draw saves.

But it would be Southampton who would take the points late with Archer sliding in at the back post to score in front of a jubilant away end to seal a crucial win in the race for promotion despite a resolute performance from the home side.

Looking to back up their victory at Leicester last weekend, the Swans came into the game against the league’s form team knowing that they would have to be at their best to end the Southampton’s impressive 18-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Not since a reverse at fellow play-off chasing Hull back in January have the Saints tasted a reverse, underlying the task ahead to Swans boss Vitor Matos, who called his opposition “the toughest assignment in the Championship.”

The Swans would be without Ethan Galbraith and Josh Key for the clash as Matos would make two changes to his starting X1 from the trip to the King Power Stadium. Midfielder Franco and Wales forward Liam Cullen earning recalls.

Saints boss Tonda Eckert recalled many of his first choice starting eleven after rotating his squad for the 3-0 midweek win against Blackburn.

Former Swans Nathan Wood and Flynn Downes returned to an X1 that included former player of the season Ryan Manning. Forward Ross Stewart would also get the nod having been preferred to Archer, with Finn Azaz charged with playmaking duties.

After a back and forth opening it would be the visiting side who would start the brightest enjoying the lion’s share possession.

After sustaining a period of pressure from the Saints, it would be the Swans who would open the scoring against the run of play.

New Zealand international Stamenic showing predatory instincts to stab home from close-range after Zan Vipotnik had cushioned Eom Ji-Sung’s deep left wing cross.

With their tails up Matos’ side almost doubled their lead minutes later. Swede Melker Widell stinging the palms of Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz with a long-range drive, much to the satisfaction of the home support.

The promotion contenders would rally and would put the Swansea defence under pressure. Brazilian playmaker Leo Scienza drawing a diving save from Swans stopper Vigouroux, before the Chile international would show good agility to keep out full back James Bree’s low drive.

The Swans though would defend solidly in numbers as they would restrict the visitors to enter the break with a slender lead.

The Saints would try to take the game by the scruff of the neck after the break but found the the Swansea rearguard carry on where they left off. A series of crucial blocks thwarting the away side’s attack.

Pressure would continue, and despite the best efforts of Vigouroux, saving brilliantly, tipping forward Ross Stewart’s powerful header over the bar, Southampton would be level from the resultant corner. Substitute Charles heading in a dangerous Scienza’s centre to score from close range.

The game started to become open, and whilst the Swans would show endeavour in the opposition half, the Saints would look the most likely to take the lead. Manning’s rasping drive across the face of goal fizzing narrowly wide of the far post with Vigouroux beaten.

Scienza’s ability to find pockets of space off the ball would cause Swansea problems and it would be the Brazilian who would come close next for the Saints curling a right-footed effort wide when well placed, whilst Bree would send a header over the crossbar after ghosting in at the far post unmarked.

The Swans would, however, give as good as they got in the final quarter with Eom’s excellent run and pass almost seeing substitute Nunes in only for a late block to deny the winger’s effort from hitting the target.

Then, soon after, Franco’s snapshot on the turn of the edge of the box would narrowly wisp past the Southampton post as the game’s pendulum would keep on swinging back-and-forth.

But it would be the visitors who would finally get the decisive breakthrough to move towards their eighth win on the bounce on the road. Caper Jander’s cross from the right picking out substitute Archer to slide home via a heavy deflection off a Swansea defender to wrongfoot Vigouroux.

That would prove the crucial blow as Southampton would take all three points that takes them to within a point of second-placed Millwall. Swansea drop a place to 15th.
