Swansea City have completed the signing of Ghana international Joseph Opoku from Belgian club Zulte Waregem.
The 20-year-old winger has agreed a four-year deal at the Swansea.com Stadium, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further 12 months.
Opoku has gone straight into the squad in Austria, where Vitor Matos‘ side have been based for their pre-season training camp.
The winger joined Zulte Waregem in 2024 and helped them win promotion to the Belgian Pro League, going on to spend two full seasons in the country’s top division.
His breakthrough came last season, when he finished with 10 goals and six assists.
Matos said the young winger’s grounding in senior football abroad should help him settle into the Championship.
“He is a young player, who has been exposed to a lot of senior football in Belgium,” the head coach said.
“He will be able to adapt to the physicality, the intensity and the amount of games in the Championship as we know he is a fast and sharp player.”
Matos added that Opoku had already taken part in his first training session with his new teammates in Austria.
Sporting director Ben Stevens pointed to the winger’s international involvement as a marker of his potential.
“Two full seasons with Zulte Waregem in Belgian’s top division plus being involved with Ghana national teams highlight the ability of this young talent,” Stevens said.
Opoku was called up to the senior Ghana squad for friendlies in May, and was named in a preliminary World Cup squad, though he missed out on final selection for the tournament.
He becomes the fifth arrival of the summer, following Elijah Just, Stephen Welsh, Moussa Yeo and Leo Walta.
The recruitment drive comes with Matos short of options in midfield after Goncalo Franco was ruled out for 10 to 12 weeks with ankle ligament damage.
Swansea’s Austria camp has already brought a draw with Holstein Kiel and a defeat to VfL Bochum, with Udinese to come before the squad returns home.
