Daniel Carmichael attacked two members of security staff at Tesco in Swansea on Sunday (26 November) when they tried to stop him leaving the store with unpaid for goods.
Carmichael left the Tesco store on Oystermouth Road with stolen items including rum, vodka and packed meats.
As he left the store the alarms activated and security staff stopped him.
One security staff member asked Carmichael to put the basket down, which he did, however he then struck the security guard to the face and upper body. Carmichael then proceeded to threaten another security guard who intervened.
South Wales Police officers from the new city centre-based Operation Viscaria taskforce arrested Carmichael with theft from the shop, assault by beating and criminal damage.
He pleaded guilty at Swansea Magistrates Court on the 27th November and was given a 20 week prison sentence.
