More than four months of lane closures on Mumbles Road have come to an end, with Wales & West Utilities completing its upgrade of over 1,000 metres of gas pipes along the route.
The project began in early March, when motorists were warned to expect phased lane closures until mid-June on one of Swansea’s busiest roads.
The work has finished around a month later than that original timetable.
Wales & West Utilities said the works were vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area.
The company said it worked closely with Swansea Council on the planning and delivery of the upgrade throughout.
It is the second attempt at the scheme — work on the route was paused in summer 2024 after the company listened to concerns from local residents and businesses about the impact of the works during the busy season.
Adam Smith, who managed the project for Wales & West Utilities, thanked the local community “for bearing with us whilst we completed this essential work.”
“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the area,” he said.
“Whether it’s heating your home, making the family dinner, or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it.”
He said the work was essential “to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
Wales & West Utilities transports gas to more than 7.5 million people across Wales and the south west of England through a network of over 35,000 kilometres of pipes.
Anyone who smells gas or suspects carbon monoxide should call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999, where trained engineers are available around the clock.
