Swansea West MP Torsten Bell is inviting people from across the city to a community meeting on how to bring Swansea together — amid what he says is a political climate that feels more divided and angrier than ever.
The ‘Bringing Swansea Together’ event takes place from 7pm to 8.30pm on Thursday 6 August, at an accessible venue in Swansea city centre.
Mr Bell has invited members of the public, trade unions, charities — and politicians from other political parties — to attend.
Alongside the MP, attendees will hear from trade unionists and anti-extremism campaigners, who will reflect on their experiences of bringing people together across Wales and what lessons could apply in Swansea.
Organisers say the discussion will focus on practical ways communities can strengthen relationships, create opportunity and build common purpose.
“People in Swansea won’t always agree on everything, and nor should they,” Mr Bell said.
“What we’ve seen too much though, is opportunists deliberately stoking hatred and division for their own gain.
“At a time when politics can feel more divided and angrier than ever, I want us to create space to talk about what brings us together and what we can learn from people already doing that work across Wales.
“Swansea has a proud tradition of community spirit and solidarity. I hope this is a chance for people from across our city to come along, share their own stories and join the conversation.”
The event comes amid concern locally and nationally about political polarisation, with organisers saying many groups and individuals in Swansea are already working to support community cohesion.
The meeting is open to residents across Swansea, and anyone wanting to reserve a seat should email torsten.bell.mp@parliament.uk with their name and postcode.
