Williams sees positives but wants ruthless edge as Swans ease past Morecambe

New Swansea City head coach Luke Williams feels there were positives to see in the 2-0 FA Cup victory against Morecambe at the Swansea.com Stadium last night but feels his side can add a ruthless edge to their play.

After the 32 days of without a manager in SA1, the start of the Williams era kicked off with a solid victory against stubborn League Two outfit Morecambe.

Second-half goals from Charlie Patino and Jerry Yates proving to be enough to send the Swans into round four of the completion for the first time in three years.

The former Notts County manager would be pleased with his side’s performance but thinks with a few tweaks and implementation of his ideas the Swans can produce more of the ‘killer’ moments in the final third of play.

“There have been some positives I have seen in the short amount of time I have had to work with the players and some things which they have struggled to implement that I was asking for,” said Williams.

“Nothing to do with quality, just a slight change in position or idea of where you attack and defend. There are a lot of small things that take time.

“Now we can look at the game back and try and show the players where we want more or less.

“I think we created enough chances to score a few more and the clean sheet was not an accident. We prevented the opposition from having a shot.

“Just looking briefly at the statistics of the game, it looked like with the numbers a team that I like to see with a lot of possession.

“The numbers are what I like to see in my favour but in reality, we want to be sharper, quicker and more ruthless.

“I said to Charlie [Patino] in training to be in certain positions. He’s an attacking midfield player, so I said try and score and create and not just but in the middle of the pitch and play lovely. In the final third, an attacking midfielder is the killer.

“At half-time, we remind him and make it really clear and then he makes an action to win the game. It was exactly what I wanted, and he scored the goal to put us in a different position.

“The longer it goes 0-0, there’s more pressure on us because we are Swansea playing a League Two side, we have to win. The longer it goes, and you don’t score then you get more vulnerable.

“At times we found space but didn’t exploit it and missed the opportunity to be aggressive, we have to try to improve that.

“Overall, though we were pretty good because we have kept a clean sheet and scored two goals.”
