Swansea youngsters send message with graffiti art project
Talented Swansea teens have used their skills to brighten up a corner of the city centre and send a positive message for passers-by to see.
The pupils worked with the ‘Flip the Streets’ project to design and create the artwork on temporary hoardings at the St David’s Centre while it waits for redevelopment.
Led by Dr Lella Nouri from Swansea University, Flip the Streets focuses on graffiti hot spot areas, particularly areas that see hateful graffiti, and replaces it with positive art work.
The young people worked with Fresh Creative while Swansea Council helped fund project and gained the necessary permissions.
The young people also were responsible for the theme and the design after taking part in workshops with the council’s youth service Evolve and colleagues from community cohesion on topics that included misogyny and sexism.
The finished artwork will include a QR code that if scanned will lead to further information on the project.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Well-being, Alyson Anthony, said: “All too often people are quick to criticise young people today so I’d like to say a big thank-you to them and congratulate them on a great piece of artwork.
“This is a great example of different partners coming together and providing opportunities for young people to not only showcase their talents but to express their ideas on issues that are important to them.”
