Swansea City have completed the loan signing of defender Tiago Parente from Benfica.
The left-back, 20, will spend the 2026-27 campaign with the Swans, who hold an option to buy at the end of it.
“We are pleased to bring in Tiago to provide us with competition and another option in the left-back position,” said head coach Vitor Matos.
“He is a talented young player who is excited by the chance to test himself in a different environment, we are happy to have him here and look forward to bringing him into our squad.”
The signing had been flagged. Speaking after Saturday’s 1-0 pre-season win over Leganes at the Swansea.com Stadium, Matos confirmed the club were closing in on a left-back to provide cover for first-choice Josh Tymon.
Parente was in the stands that afternoon watching his new team-mates.
He will wear the number 20 shirt in SA1, and is available for Saturday’s Carabao Cup first round tie against Birmingham City in Swansea, which kicks off at 3pm.
Sporting director Ben Stevens said: “We are extremely happy that Tiago has agreed to join us, and he arrives from a club in Benfica who historically have produced very talented young players.
“He had a great season last year playing in the Portuguese second division, the Premier League International Cup and the Uefa Youth League.
“He also featured internationally for Portugal under-20s, and we are hopeful he can continue his development with us.”
Parente is from Bragança in the north east of Portugal and joined the Benfica set-up in 2016/17, spending a decade at the club and coming through its Campus academy before making his senior debut in May 2025.
He made 25 appearances for Benfica B in the Portuguese second tier last season, scoring once and adding two assists, alongside games for the under-23s and in the Uefa Youth League.
He has been capped 37 times by Portugal at youth level, and in June was part of the squad that won the Toulon Tournament, earning a place in the team of the tournament.
Benfica confirmed the move on Monday and wished him well on his first spell outside Portugal.
Matos is still hoping to add a central midfielder before the window closes.
That follows a week of departures, with Liam Cullen joining Leicester City, Cameron Congreve set for Westerlo and Ollie Cooper heading out on loan.
