SWANS: Midfielder Cameron Congreve set to leave club for Westerlo

Swansea City’s Wales midfielder Cameron Congreve is set to join Belgian top-flight side Westerlo for what Swansea Bay News understands is a seven-figure fee.

The Swansea academy product, 22, impressed during a loan spell at Scottish Premiership side Dundee last season.

Wales international Congreve’s form earned him his first senior international caps in the June friendlies against Ghana and Romania.

There had been a feeling that he could also push for a first-team place at Swansea in 2026-27, but the Championship club have instead sanctioned his exit.

The deal will include add-ons and a sell-on clause, while Swansea will also be given the option to match any bid from another club should Westerlo agree to sell Congreve at any point.

Congreve joined Swansea at under-nine level and will leave having made 19 senior appearances, including three league starts, for the Welsh club.

He scored three goals in 36 games for Dundee after scoring six times in 47 appearances during a loan spell at Bromley in 2024-25.

A move to the Belgian Pro League offers the regular first-team football that was not guaranteed at the Swansea.com Stadium this season.

Congreve joins fellow Wales international Liam Cullen in leaving the club this week, with more exits expected as head coach Vitor Matos looks to refine his squad ahead of the season opener against Birmingham City in the League Cup next weekend at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Cullen’s departure was confirmed on Thursday, the Kilgetty-born forward ending 19 years at his boyhood club to sign a three-year deal at Leicester City, where he links up again with former Swansea head coach Russell Martin.

Money has been going the other way too. Matos added Red Bull Salzburg winger Moussa Yeo on a four-year deal, and New Zealand international Elijah Just, who marked his debut with a goal in the 2-0 win over Udinese in Austria.

Losing two Wales internationals inside a week leaves the head coach shorter of senior options in the final third with the season a fortnight away.

Matos has shown he will look downwards for the answers. He handed extensive minutes to academy players during the pre-season defeat to VfL Bochum, with the under-21s well represented across the three-period friendly.

For Congreve, though, the pathway he came through ends at the door marked out.

He leaves as one of the academy’s most decorated recent graduates, capped by his country before his 22nd birthday, and with a matching clause that means Swansea keep a hand on his future.
