Ad van visits Swansea to highlight ‘damage’ 20mph scheme is causing drivers

The van visited Swansea Road, Penllergaer to highlight the damage the Conservatives say the scheme is causing to drivers and the wider economy with messages such as ’20mph isn’t working’ and ‘Labour are Slamming the Brakes on the Welsh Economy’ emblazoned on the side of the van, before going on tour across the rest of South Wales.

A parallel van also visited locations across North Wales on the same day.

South Wales West Senedd Member, Tom Giffard was in Penllergaer to meet the van and said: “The introduction of Labour’s blanket 20mph policy has led to the largest ever number of signatures on a Senedd petition, with more than 460,000 making their voice heard. But the Welsh Labour Government are burying their head in the sand, ignoring the voice of the people. That’s why we commissioned this ad van today.”

Tom added: “We know the introduction of this 20mph scheme will cost our economy up to £9bn, with no mention from the Welsh Labour Government as to how to replace the damage to our economy. That will ultimately only serve to make us all poorer, at a time where few of us can afford it.

Swansea Conservative Council Group Leader, Cllr Lyndon Jones was also in Penllergaer and said: “Of course 20mph is sensible outside schools and heavily built-up areas, but the problem is the guidance from the Welsh Labour Government is too restrictive and means there is a lack of local flexibility to adopt a common-sense approach.

Lyndon added: “I’m calling on Swansea Labour Council to work with the Welsh Government to change the guidance to ensure that we have a sensible strategy, not one that puts the brakes on Swansea’s economy.”

Over 460,000 people have so far signed a petition calling on the Welsh Government to scrap the new 20mph rules, with 78,000 signatures coming from Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.
