SUMMER SAVINGS: Cheaper days out and kids’ meals at the click of a button — with Dan-yr-Ogof among the attractions signed up

Families across Swansea Bay can now type in their postcode and see where cheaper days out and children’s meals are on offer this summer — with one of the Swansea Valley’s best-known attractions among those signed up.

The UK Government’s Great British Summer Savings website has gone live, listing restaurants, cinemas and attractions that have pledged to pass on the Chancellor’s summer tax cut to customers.

VAT on a range of family activities was cut from 20% to 5% on 25 June, running until 1 September — covering family cinema tickets, admission to attractions for both children and adults, and children’s meals in restaurants.

Among those signed up is Dan-yr-Ogof, the showcaves centre in the upper Swansea Valley, alongside chains including Nando’s, Bill’s, Las Iguanas and ODEON — with Techniquest and Rhondda Heritage Park also on the list within day-trip range.

Using the site is simple: enter a postcode, set how far you’re willing to travel, and optionally filter by the type of attraction or food offer you’re after — and a list of participating businesses appears alongside a map.

There’s nothing to claim and no voucher codes: book a table or buy a ticket as normal, and the discount comes off the price automatically.

More than 1,700 businesses’ offers across the UK are on the site so far, and the government says it is speaking daily to businesses yet to join, to encourage them to sign up.

One point worth knowing: the tax cut itself applies to eligible sales everywhere, but it is up to each business whether to pass the saving on to customers — the website lists those that have committed to doing so.

The eligible activities cover children’s menu meals eaten in restaurants; children’s and family tickets for cinemas, theatres, concerts, shows and exhibitions; and admission for children and adults to attractions including amusement parks, fairs, museums, zoos, soft play centres, circuses, adventure parks, nature reserves and wildlife parks.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the tax cuts meant families would be able to enjoy “more of the little treats and days out that make the British summer holidays so special”.

“Our new website will make it easier for them to take advantage of Great British Summer Savings and help afford the moments that matter,” she said.

Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens said the UK Government was “helping families across Wales with the cost of living and putting more money back in their pockets”.

She said the VAT cut sat alongside action on fuel prices, increases to the National Minimum and Living Wage, and moves to cut energy bills.

The scheme runs until 1 September, with offers searchable at summersavings.gov.uk.
