Liam Cullen’s 19-year association with Swansea City looks to be nearing its end, with Leicester City in advanced talks to sign the Wales forward.
The 27-year-old is expected to seal a permanent switch to the League One club, where he would be reunited with former Swans head coach Russell Martin.
Cullen has two years left on his contract, but Leicester’s interest is understood to be at an advanced stage.
Kilgetty-born Cullen joined the Swansea academy at the age of eight and has scored 37 goals in 207 appearances for his boyhood club.
His senior debut came in an EFL Cup defeat by Crystal Palace under Graham Potter in August 2018.
His first goal is the one supporters remember: the dramatic 4-1 win over Reading on the final day of the drawn-out 2019-20 season, which sent Steve Cooper’s side into the Championship play-offs.
If the move completes, his final act in a Swansea shirt may prove to be a goal, opening the scoring in the win over Udinese in Austria on Friday.
Cullen has two goals in 15 Wales internationals, and has often played a deeper role for club and country, as he has done under Craig Bellamy.
His inability to nail down the starting number nine spot at Swansea has been part of the story of his senior career.
The Swans are hoping to keep last season’s Championship top scorer Zan Vipotnik, and to get more from Adam Idah in the season ahead.
Vitor Matos has already reshaped his attacking options this summer.
Wingers Elijah Just and Moussa Yeo have arrived, along with Joseph Opoku, Stephen Welsh and Leo Walta.
For Martin, it would mean another familiar face at Leicester, and a player he knows from his time at the Swansea.com Stadium.
For Cullen, it would end an association stretching back to 2007, from an eight-year-old at the academy to more than 200 first-team games.
For Swansea, it would be the first significant departure of the summer after a window spent almost entirely on arrivals.
