Swansea University student who fell out of halls of residence sixth-floor window dies

A man has died just over a week after plunging from a sixth-floor window at a university campus.

Student Matthew Gilbert, 19, was taken to Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales in the early hours of Sunday 14 April to treat his injuries.

Police have confirmed he died in hospital on Wednesday following his fall at Swansea University’s Singleton campus that left him in a critical condition.

A statement from South Wales Police said:

“We were called to an incident in the early hours of Sunday, April 14, 2024 at Swansea University, Singleton Campus.

“Matthew Gilbert, a 19-year-old student, was taken to Cardiff Heath Hospital as a result of the incident due to injuries sustained from falling out of a sixth-floor window.

“Police have been informed that Matthew passed away in hospital on April 24. Family members are being supported by specially-trained officers.”

Detective inspector David Connick added:

“We express our condolences to Matthew’s family, who officers are continuing to support. Swansea University has been informed of Matthew’s death, and they will provide support to students.”

A statement for Swansea University said:

“We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Matthew Gilbert, who was a
student here at Swansea University.

“Our thoughts are with Matthew’s family at this time and we extend our deepest condolences at their tragic loss.

“Matthew was a first-year student with us studying LLB Law with Criminology. He was
making excellent progress with his course. His loss is felt by all who knew him. We are
working closely with students and staff to support them through this difficult time.

“As there is an ongoing investigation by police and coroner, it would not be appropriate to
comment further at this time.”
