Public asked for views on Singleton Park improvement plan

They’re invited to drop-in sessions in the park next Thursday and Friday (11 & 12 April) when matters under discussion could range from drainage and lighting to WiFi and access.

The sessions will be hosted by Wales-based events management specialist SC Productions on behalf of Swansea Council which facilitates the staging of several major Singleton Park events every year.

The council has pledged £350,000 from its extensive Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) programme to carry out improvements this year.

The council’s wide-ranging culture and tourism SPF initiative is investing in Swansea and its people, strengthening the area’s culture and tourism sectors.

The council has received funding from the UK Government through its UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Council cabinet member Robert Francis-Davies said: “Singleton Park has become established as a venue for great events enjoyed by tens of thousands of people every year.

“It’s also a beautiful and important place for people who enjoy it for other forms of leisure throughout the year, including walking, cycling and simply relaxing.

“We want to ensure that the improvements we make this year reflect the needs and wishes of local residents and park users of all types.

“No decisions have yet been made and the drop-ins are the ideal chance for people to influence how the SPF funding might be used. To be clear, this isn’t a consultation about whether major events and concerts should continue to be held in the park.”

The drop-ins, where all are welcome, are due to be held next to the park’s Swiss Cottage on Thursday, April 11 from 1-4pm and Friday April 12 from 10am-1pm. Those who can’t make a drop-in can make their views known by completing an online questionnaire.

Feedback will then be used as the council formulates its improvements plan for the park.

The expansive Singleton Park has, in previous years, hosted big name performers such as The Stereophonics, Jess Glynne and Madness as well as multiple family days, charity races and food festivals

This summer’s shows it’s due to host include James Arthur, retro festival Let’s Rock and orchestral dance music event, Classic Ibiza.

Council investments in event infrastructure in recent years have included drainage works, updated water infrastructure and additional electricity supplies. As part of the venue booking process, event promoters agree to return the site to the condition in which they found it although this process can take some time, especially at times of poor weather.

The council say that its parks staff continue to maintain the park on a daily basis and attractions there include the Singleton Botanical Gardens.
