ST HELEN’S ROAD: Man arrested and road closed after second serious assault in two months

St Helen’s Road in Swansea is closed in both directions this morning after a serious assault, South Wales Police said.

Officers were called to the street at around 6:47am today, Thursday 13 August, following a report of a serious assault.

A 36-year-old man from Waun Wen has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent, the force said, and is in police custody.

Section 18 is one of the most serious assault charges, covering wounding or causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A 40-year-old man, also from Waun Wen, has been taken to hospital with what police described as a significant injury.

The force said both men are understood to be known to each other.

The road is shut between St Helens roundabout and the Oasis Grill House, and the force said it is expected to remain closed for some time, with motorists advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

It is the second serious assault in two months on the same stretch of road, outside the city’s YMCA. In June, a man was arrested after a knife attack there, which police treated as an isolated incident.

An investigation into today’s incident is ongoing, and police said an increased presence will be seen on St Helen’s Road for community reassurance while officers carry out enquiries.
